I believe this song to be a tragic testiment of a man who had love and let it go due to his mistakes. The opening line "my first love was a wicked twisted road" sets the stage for the rest of the song by telling us that his love was all over the place, obscure, and unpredictable. He goes on through out the song giving more examples of how things went bad for his love. He describes these short comings as "castle in the sky", "fearless drive in rain", "wild sinful night" and "angry painful song". All of these are describing what went wrong in the relationship, but I also believe these to be a story of a downward evolution of the relationship. Each stanza, with the exception of the first and last which are acting more as an introduction and conclusion of the whole relationship, describes different point of the relationship and how he messed things up. Stanza 2 I believe talks about how he had distanced himself from his problems and he thought we wasnt going to be able to get through them until he tried to and in the process of that he alienated himself from everyone else. Stanza 3 is the starting point of where he starts letting it slip away. He has stopped working at his problems and has now just left it up in the air as you could say. He started to pity himself without trying to fix it. Stanza 4 is the point where he started pulling away from the relationship and started trying to do his own thing. He was trying to live life with out thinking about what he still had behind him. And stanza 5 is the realization of what he has done and that there is nothing left for him because he pushed and ran away from eveything he had. This is a very sad song of the wrong doings of a man who lost love because of his actions and his regets to the choices he made.
