Wicked Twisted Road by Reckless Kelly

My first love was a wicked twisted road
I hit the million mile mark at seventeen years old
I never saw the rainbow much less a pot of gold
yeah my first love was a wicked twisted road

My first love was a castle in the sky
I never thought I'd make it 'till I had the guts to try
and I sat up in my tower while the whole world passed me by
yeah my first love was a castle in the sky

My first love was a fearless drive in rain
scared to death I thought I'd never see her face again
they say god was crying so I guess he felt my pain
yeah my first love was a fearless drive in rain

My first love was a wild sinful night
I ran out with the big dogs guess I had more bark then bite
even thought I won the battle in the end I lost the fight
yeah my first love was a wild sinful night

My first love was an angry painful song
I wanted one so bad I went and did everything wrong
a lesson in reality would come before too long
yeah my first love was an angry painful song

My first love was a wicked twisted road
I hit the million mile mark at seventeen years old
I never saw the rainbow much less a pot of gold
yeah my first love was a wicked twisted road

My first love was a wicked twisted road

I believe this song to be a tragic testiment of a man who had love and let it go due to his mistakes. The opening line "my first love was a wicked twisted road" sets the stage for the rest of the song by telling us that his love was all over the place, obscure, and unpredictable. He goes on through out the song giving more examples of how things went bad for his love. He describes these short comings as "castle in the sky", "fearless drive in rain", "wild sinful night" and "angry painful song". All of these are describing what went wrong in the relationship, but I also believe these to be a story of a downward evolution of the relationship. Each stanza, with the exception of the first and last which are acting more as an introduction and conclusion of the whole relationship, describes different point of the relationship and how he messed things up. Stanza 2 I believe talks about how he had distanced himself from his problems and he thought we wasnt going to be able to get through them until he tried to and in the process of that he alienated himself from everyone else. Stanza 3 is the starting point of where he starts letting it slip away. He has stopped working at his problems and has now just left it up in the air as you could say. He started to pity himself without trying to fix it. Stanza 4 is the point where he started pulling away from the relationship and started trying to do his own thing. He was trying to live life with out thinking about what he still had behind him. And stanza 5 is the realization of what he has done and that there is nothing left for him because he pushed and ran away from eveything he had. This is a very sad song of the wrong doings of a man who lost love because of his actions and his regets to the choices he made.

  1. I really like this song and its lyrics. Your take on it really makes sense to me and I can't help but agree with all your interpretation of it. I especially like your take on stanza two, and I think maybe when he says he's in his tower, it means he's waiting for someone to rescue him from his sadness, yet unfortunately his love couldn't do it for him. I'm sadly an emotional masochist who loves forlorn-sounding songs even though the angst and sorrow nearly kill me, and this one is just beautiful.

  2. Wow, I’d never heard this song before now and I love it so much! It’s so easy for every 17-year old to relate to! I usually can’t stand songs that are so repetitive but I guess that I could really relate to this song. Wicked Twisted Road will definitely be added to my playlist!

  3. Like Courtney said, I agree with you on your take to this song and its lyrics. I can relate to this song completely and its meaning. When he says his first love is a castle in the sky I see him in school having a crush or admiring a girl who he thinks is above him and he doesn’t think he has a chance. After taking a chance and going for it he realizes that he does. I shall go to I tunes now and buy!

  4. It's a pretty good song. I went ahead and listened to it, and even though I haven't been to big on country music lately, but this is really a good song. I think it is has some lyrics that everyone can relate to in some parts of their lives. And that's really what listening to music is about I guess, you comparing the songs to times in your life and how it must be about you.

  5. OMG well i seriously like this song. I had never heard it before now. But yes like EVERYONE ELSE i also agree that this guy lost something extremely specail. And to look back on it, gives him both good and bad memories. This song is like a theme song to every 17 year old. I am pretty sure that everyone goes through this once in their life. I am not saying its a good thing but its good to learn from your mistakes and keep trying.

  6. I really like the lyrics of this song! And for someone to realize the mistakes of doing wrong to something amazing they had is a big step up. Most guys (not saying all lol), but most guys do a lot of girls wrong and don't see that what they had was something truly amazing. And yet they continue doing it to every girl and still question why can't they find a good relationship! But good song to choose since you can't find very many guys to admit to their faults.
