Iris by Goo Goo Dolls

And I’d give up forever to touch you
'cause I know that you feel me somehow
You’re the closest to heaven that i’ll ever be
And I don’t want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
’cause sooner or later it’s over
I just don’t want to miss you tonight

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am.

And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you’re alive

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they'd understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

This song is one of my favorites, but it has posed some sort of a challenge looking for what it really is trying to say. Then I was enlightened when I realized it was written for a movie and after reading the summary of the movie it makes a whole lot more sence, the movie is City of Angels in case you were wondering im going to go try and watch it soon. But before I found out about the movie I was actually starting to come to a conclusion about the song. I feel like this song is a timeline of a relationship between a man who feels like life is too go to be true between him and his girl. The first stanza I believe is the man feeling like he is in a place of isolation from his girl he really wants to be with but he cant. the second stanza is about the man finally getting to be with his girl, but he feels like its not going to last almost like he doubts himself to being of high enough standard for her. the fourth stanza i believe is the man feeling like things are too good for to be true he feels like he must be dreaming or not even be alive anymore. the chorus is the man just wanting to disappear to aviod the shame of not being good enough for her and they world wouldnt understand what they are doing together he feels like his relationship isnt meant to be at all but he just wants to be remember.

  1. I posted this song as my facebook status today! I've never seen the movie, and I'm not sure if i would want to in case it ruins the song for me. I think the most profound part of the song is he wants this girl to know "who I am". I've always wondered if that meant he has some terrible secret, or if there is another side to him that the audience (the Girl) doesn't see at first glance.

  2. I am really glad you picked this song because for one it is a song i truly love and i totally agree on how you pretty much summarized this song. I havnt seen the movie this song was based on, but i plan to watch it soon. This guy loves this girl but i believe their is something wrong with this relationship. He says "you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming/Or the moment of truth in your lies" and it makes me feel that the girl is at fault for this wronging. Which in turn makes this guy "And I don’t want the world to see me/i just want you to know who I am". I think maybe that this guy loves this girl even though he has had his heart "broken" and he doesnt want the world to look at him bad for this but still wants her to see how much he truly loves her.

  3. Oh wow, you picked one of my very favorite songs to analyze! Personally I adore the unique music that frames his voice. My interpretation of it is that he thinks of himself as a broken person who doesn't deserve the girl he loves or to be in this world, but he wants her to know the good things about him despite his failures or how others look at him. He wants her to see the true him in spite of all the ugly things on the surface that the world sees. But I really like your interpretation of it, too! The great thing about this song is that it has many ways to analyze.

  4. This song is literally on every single one of my playlists. It just never gets old, the message is so powerful! For me, it's on of those songs that you never get tired of because you almost feel a different emotion every time you listen to it. Sometimes this song makes me upset and sometimes it makes me smile, but that's probably just a girl thing. I love the music, the lyrics and the band!
